Hydroponic Techniques and Supplies Commonly Used by Cultivators
The system of using water to cultivate plants is as old as the hanging gardens of Babylon or perhaps even older. However the technique wasn’t perfected until 1930, when scientists discovered that plants can grow without deriving nutrients from the soil. Today there are several gardens established in countries all over the world that specialize in hydroponics. The technique is particularly popular in Western Europe and Canada. UAE too has encouraged its farmers to use the technique to reduce its dependence on imported produce. There are several supplies and accessories used by cultivators to help them with cultivation. There are several techniques that are popularly used to cultivate these plants. Common techniques include:
Deep Water Culture: In this technique plant roots are suspended on a rich bed of nutrients; with the water being continuously oxygenated by networking them through a reservoir. This technique allows the plants to absorb oxygen in large quantities thereby promoting its growth and is ideal for small and medium sized plants. Herbs, small flowers and lettuce cultivation are ideal for the technique.
Nutrient Film Technique: A thin layer of nutrient solution is made to flow over the roots of plants. Small plastic ducts carry the water and flow at a depth of a fraction of an inch. The nutrient content is controlled through a pumping mechanism. Thus plants are grown in a shallow current, allowing the nutrients to flow over the roots. The technique is ideal for larger size plants. Thus tomatoes and African violets are ideal for the technique.
Ebb and Flow System: Through the system, grow trays are flooded with nutrients and then drained on a reservoir with the help of submerged pumps. There are several kits that are readily available to help you mix and match supplies. Sometimes coconut fibers and rockwool is used instead of water. Herbs, lettuce, peppers, small tomatoes and flowers are ideal for growing through the technique.
Cultivators also choose from other technique like aeroponics and drip system.

I need help on making a hydroponic grow system for a school project?
I don't know what to buy, I did some searching online and I hear something about nutrients and I don't know what it is or where to buy it, or how much to give, or how to give it, I also hear that you can make one out of a 'fish tank' .... I did some looking around and there is alot of stuff about 'pumps' and 'hoses' and 'rockwool', I need to get a good grade on this or I will FLUNK so the first person to give me 'step by step' instructions and info on the hoses,pumps,and rockwool, and tell me just what are they needed for and how to use them will get '10 points' Thank you and don't let me down.
Kind of hard to describe without pictures. Using a fish tank is a form of hydroponics called aquaponics, but can be quite simple. Basically set up a fish tank (no plants) with fish, an few air pumps (or a big one) and some air rocks. Also get a filter and pump (you will need one untill the roots of the plants reach the water ). Any pet shop will help you set up this at no extra charge to the parts you buy. If they do then go to another shop
Then get a tray that fits on top of the fish tank. Buy some net pots and rock wool (otherwise known as gordon cubes) and parlite (small battes to clay that are pre prepared) All of there can be found at any garden centre, Put the pearlite in the net pots and then place the rock wool in the top of the pearlite.
Cut holes in the tray and place the filled pots in the holes (make sure that they just fit and don't fall through). Wet the rock wool with water from the fish tank (make it moist not soaking). Make a hole about 2cm deep in the top of the rock wool. Drop your seeds in. As for seeds I recommend basil as this grows fast and will thrive in such a set up. Keep the rock woll moist untill the roots of the plant reach the water in the tank or make a whick from a piece of cloth to the rock wool.
Once the roots are feeding from the tank you do not need to do anything but keep the water topped up and feed the fish. No nutrients are needed as the fish excrement will feed the plants. Also remember to remove the filter as you want the plants to clean the water.
